What is the best size ATV/SSV for me (and the rest of my family)?

Powersports

There are a lot of great things about ATVs, but one of the bigger benefits is that they come in a big range of sizes that not only suit different sized adults, but also mean there are options for the entire family. This makes them versatile and allows the ability to literally grow up with them, and be passed down (if you keep up the maintenance and servicing for them to remain in good nick). Something you might not be completely aware of though, is how to gauge the best size ATV/SSV for you, and the whole family? Here are our notes…

Why size matters

There are a couple of reasons, and safety is a big one. Especially for the kids, and as they grow and upgrade, it’s really important that they are riding an appropriately sized model. There are safety features that exist on the Youth models, designed for their novice experience, and allowing them to concentrate on learning. Moving into teens and adults, it becomes more about personal requirements, and sizing is a big part of that. You want to ensure the size and weight isn’t too much, or too little, for your own measurements.

It’s also about the experience you’re looking for; are you looking for an all-family ride (with more than two seats), a dual ride or singular? What terrain are you taking it out on? What towing/trailer capacity do you have? Will you need to upgrade along with your ATV, and is that part of your budget? Size will play a factor in answering all of these questions.

Know the size range

There are four main size ranges for Can-Ams, and other SSVs.

  1. Youth: Can-Am youth ATVs like the DS 90 (which you can go in the draw to win here!) are around 127 to 152 cm, long and 76 to 101 cm wide. This suits children from about 6 years of age up to around 10 years. They typically have added safety functions like speed controls to ensure they just need to focus on riding technique and the trail in front of them.

  2. Small: Small ATVs are great for teens upgrading from the Youth range, or smaller statured adults. They are around 165 to 177 cm long, and 101 to 109 cm wide. Although this size is not featured in the Can-Am range it is still a great option if you’re not ready for Standard size just yet.

  3. Standard: Where the bulk of the Can-Am range sits, a size that is comfortable to a wide variety of adult adventure riders and features seats for up to 3 people. They are around 177 to 216 cm long, and 109 to 114 cm wide.

  4. Large: These are for multiple people, typically, in the SSV range, seating at least four or up to 6 like the Can-Am 2021 Defender MAX XT HD10. They are about 216 to 241 cm long, and 114 to 122 cm wide.

Finding the right size

While you can gauge this a bit from the above specs, the best way to know the right size for you and your family is to measure up against an SSV, and give it a test drive if you can! Head on into our Sutto’s store and we can help measure you up, and/or attend one of our demo days, where you can feel for yourself how certain sizes ride, and the perfect Can-Am for every family member.
