Rip, Roar, and Explore: Australia's Top Jet Ski Waterways

Watersports

Spring has hit and summer isn’t far away, so it’s time to get those outdoor memories cracking with long days spent on some of the country’s best waterways, on your prized Sea-Doo. There are heaps of incredible spots to take the family, whether heading local for a fun Sunday, or as part of a trip to see the nation’s sites, here are our favourite places to go full throttle (not really, stick to the speed limit, folks. Just a fun term to use).

Gold Coast, Queensland

One of the best places to jet ski on the Gold Coast is the Broadwater. The protected area is a jet-skiers dream, and often listed as one of the best PWC bodies of water in the world. This is largely due to its calm and relatively shallow waters, making it suitable for all skill levels. You can enjoy the scenic views of the Gold Coast skyline and explore various canals and waterways in this area. If you don’t yet own a PWC, you can rent one from various operators along the coast. Many of these operators offer guided tours and jet ski hire services, making it an awesome experience for both beginners and experienced riders.

Jervis Bay, South Coast NSW

Jervis Bay’s white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters are perfect for PWC lovers. Its vastness means you can get the thrill of riding while being surrounded by an amazing coastline and even some marine life if you decide to take a snorkel break. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a novice looking for a unique water adventure, Jervis Bay is a pretty unforgettable destination and is super family friendly.

Great Barrier Reef, North Queensland

There’s no need to talk about how incredible this area is… it’s in the name. We largely know it as one of the wonders of the world, with vibrant marine life and its vital place in our ecosystem. While an extremely protected area, there are still plenty of opportunities to experience this special place, and riding your PWC is one of them. While carefully regulated to ensure protection of the environment, they do allow jet-skiers to take in the beauty up close. There are guided PWC tours that not only give you the opportunity to ride in one of the world’s most famous waterways, it also offers really valuable education on the area.

Port Phillip Bay, Victoria

Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay is a prime jet skiing destination. This expansive waterway provides peaceful bays and exhilarating open waters, making it ideal for riders of all skill levels, and to suit whatever experience you’re after. There are a few iconic locations to explore, including St Kilda Beach and those cool colourful bathing boxes at Brighton Beach. Additionally, you can venture further to the Mornington Peninsula, where there’s a diverse mix of serene and adventurous waterways, Port Phillip Bay can give you a pretty unforgettable journey through Melbourne's stunning coastline.

Darwin Harbour, Northern Territory

Jet skiing in Darwin Harbour offers a truly unique experience. Though the state is largely renowned for its red earth, the harbour is a tropical waterway that can give you some chance encounters with the region’s iconic wildlife. Which is just a fancier way of saying, you have a good chance of spotting a croc. The harbour's pristine, blue waters combine adrenaline-pumping jet skiing and the opportunity to connect with nature in a way that is very special and specific to this area. Again, there are some very worthwhile guided PWC tours to take here.

Perth, Western Australia

The Swan River, and its neighbouring coastline, is a great jet skiing destination. Jet skiing here gives you an opportunity to soak up Perth cityscape while enjoying the rush of the waves. What sets this location apart is the prospect of encountering marine life, up close and personal, including playful dolphins (get your waterproof iPhone cover, asap). As you navigate the waterway, you can get an adrenaline rush ride, or chill out beyond the break and take in the surrounds with more chill.

Always remember to follow safety guidelines, wear appropriate safety gear, and be aware of local regulations while jet skiing to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
